SLIYS

Dissecting language one piece at a time.

SLIYS - Frequently Asked Questions
Students in a learning lab. Why should I attend SLIYS?
SLIYS will provide you with tools to better understand how languages work. You will learn about sound systems, grammatical systems, writing systems, and the ways that speakers of different languages interact with each other. Whether you want to become a foreign language teacher, join the Peace Corps, live in another country, or whatever your reason for studying another language, the knowledge you gain from your SLIYS experience is certain to help!

Will I get better grades in my foreign language classes after attending SLIYS?
While we cannot guarantee that SLIYS will improve your grades, many students find that having a better understanding of language allows them to become more sophisticated and adept language learners.

Who will my fellow scholars be?
Participants will be students just like you; that is, high school students (entering 10th-12th grade) from all around central Ohio who are interested in language learning.

Who are the instructors?
Instructors are members of the Department of Linguistics at the Ohio State University, including faculty, staff, and PhD candidates. They have a wide range of linguistic expertise and are familiar with an extensive and diverse collection of the world’s languages.

What will be the ratio of instructors to youth scholars?
The anticipated ratio of instructors to students will be approximately 1:6.

What arrangements will be made for meals?
SLIYS programming will include a lunch break each day. On Monday and Friday, lunch will be provided by the program. On other days, students should bring a lunch. If you have particular dietary restrictions which we should be aware of in planning the Monday and Friday meals, you will have the opportunity to inform us of these after being admitted into the program.

How will scholars get to and from programming?
SLIYS participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from OSU campus. Although SLIYS programming will not begin until 9:00 in the morning, instructors will be available starting at 8:15 am to welcome scholars to the facility. Likewise, while programming ends at 4:00 pm., instructors will stay on site until all students have left, but no later than 5:30 pm.

It is our preference that students be dropped off and picked up by a parent. However, should scholars need to drive themselves, arrangements can be made to secure on-campus parking at the scholar's expense. Information about parking will be made available to all admitted scholars.
