Doug Nelson, Department of EEOB, Ohio State University: "The evolutionary history of white-crowned sparrow song dialects"
Time: 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm
Location: 122 Oxley Hall
Young song birds learn their songs by imitating one or more adult models. The learning process in birds resembles speech development in humans to some degree. White-crowned sparrows learn during an early sensitive phase and often breed nearby as adults. This restricted dispersal from the site of learning leads to the formation of vocal dialects, in which neighboring males share similar songs. White-crowned sparrows form a linear series of dialects in coastal dune habitats from central California to British Columbia. I will apply some methods of phylogenetic analysis in an attempt to reconstruct the evolutionary history of these dialects.
