About Columbus

Now for a bit of news about Columbus, the city that never sleeps (at least some graduate students in it don't seem to get much sleep) with its endless activities for linguists and other people. The cowtown days are long gone with movies at the Drexel Gateway Theater in the South Campus Gateway, the Drexel Arena Grand Theater or the AMC Lennox Town Center 24 and performances from rock via classical to jazz almost every night in the Wexner Center, the Ohio Theatre, the Southern Theatre, a burgeoning Arena District downtown including the LC Pavilion which, along with Germain Amphitheater and OSU's own Schottenstein arena, is a stop on many national tours of bands and various performing groups, ... Students generally get amazing discounts, like free entry at the classical concerts Monday evening in Weigel Hall or $8 for any seat at the Columbus Symphony when you buy the tickets the evening of the show at the Ohio Theatre. On the sports side, Columbus is a major-league city with the Columbus Blue Jackets professional hockey team, the Columbus Crew major-league soccer team, as well as the Clippers AAA baseball team, and of course all the great sports here at OSU ... way more than you'll ever have time for.

Social Events

The first Friday of every month is Happy Hour in Oxley Hall where department members get together and socialize.

Other

SLA (Student Linguistic Association) — The SLA represents the interests and needs of the department's graduate students basically covering everything not included by the other groups above. Just a few of the functions of the SLA include representing the graduate students at department meetings, electing graduate students to departmental and university committees and, most importantly, throwing parties. For more information about the SLA or about grad student life, contact SLA President DJ Hovermale (djh@ling.ohio-state.edu).

Underlings (Undergraduate Linguistics Club) — The Underlings is a club for undergraduate linguistics majors, minors or any other undergrads interested in linguistics. They meet several times a quarter, often with a speaker. They also host TongueFest every year. For more information, contact president Teresa Pratt (pratt.120@osu.edu) or advisor Julie McGory (jmcgory@ling.ohio-state.edu).
