Undergraduate Study at OSU Linguistics

Undergraduate Major in Linguistics

There are two tracks in this major: Track A and Track B. Track A is designed to give students familiarity with a broad range of subject areas in linguistics. Track B is particularly appropriate for students planning to go on to graduate school. As a means of promoting a deeper understanding of linguistics, Track B requires a sequence of two (typically) upper level courses in one subject area. In addition to these two tracks, undergraduates have the option of working out with the undergraduate advisor a variant tailored to their particular needs.

Track A (at least 45 hours, excluding prerequisites)

  1. Prerequisite Course Work (10 hours) — does not count toward the minimum number of hours required in the major
    Linguistics (H)201 or 270 (formerly 202) or 601 5 hours
Additional advanced foreign language course beyond 104
(preferably at the 200 level) or Linguistics 550 (Field Methods) 5 hours
  2. Major Core Courses (25 hours)
    1. Required (may be taken in any order)
      Phonetics: Linguistics 500
      Syntax: Linguistics 502
      Phonology: Linguistics 503
    2. Two courses from the following list:
Historical Linguistics: Linguistics 311 or 611
      Sociolinguistics: Linguistics (H)372 (formerly 361) or 375 (formerly 365) or 661.01
      Psycholinguistics: Linguistics 371 or 615
Computational Linguistics: Linguistics 384 or 684.01
Field Methods: Linguistics 550 or 650.01 (may not be used concurrently to satisfy the language prerequisite)
  3. Ling 595 Undergraduate Research Seminar in Linguistics (5 hours)
  4. Major Elective Courses (15 hours)
Students following the liberal arts track in linguistics must take at least 15 hours of electives within linguistics, chosen in consultation with their major adviser. These courses will often complement an area of secondary interest for the student (often a minor or second major). Further below we provide some possible configurations of major elective courses keyed to related areas.
