Undergraduate Study at OSU Linguistics
Undergraduate Minor in Linguistics
There are a number of different subfields of linguistics, with connections to other disciplines in such diverse areas as the study of various languages and cultures in the humanities; psychology, anthropology, and other social sciences; physics, biology, and other natural sciences; and computer science and engineering. The Linguistics faculty offers courses in most of these subfields, making the curriculum particularly diverse. A number of special Linguistics minors have been developed designed for students with a major in a related field. For majors not listed below, contact the linguistics undergraduate advisors noted above for recommended courses. Each Linguistics minor involves 25 credit hours of linguistics courses, one of which has to be LING (H)201, (H)270, or 601. Typically, all linguistics courses for the minor will be taken in the Department of Linguistics, but a linguistics-related course in the student's major area of study can count for up to 5 of the 25 credit hours required for the minor. Each minor must include at least one 500-level course; where appropriate, with the advisor's permission, the student may substitute a corresponding 600-level course. The additional three courses should be chosen in consultation with the advisors in both the Major and Minor departments. The courses listed for the various subfields below should be viewed as suggestions, which may be over-ridden by a student's particular interests and needs, as permitted by the advisors. After the Department of Linguistics adviser has approved your Minor Program Form, you should file the form with your college or school counselor. For further information about the minor program, contact the Undergraduate Program Coordinator listed at the top of this page.
