Although child acquisition of vowel categories based on quality has been fairly well studied, less is known about the process of categorizing vowels based on durational criteria. In this work, I will be using Japanese, a language where vowels have a phonological length contrast, to examine vowel quantity categorization in children from the ages of 2 to 5. The process by which children become more adult-like in their productions of vowel length may suggest how children build up mental representations of these vowel categories.Noah Diewald'Word and paradigm morphology for sign based categorial grammars: a focus on morphotactics'This presentation will focus on my project of producing a formal theory of inflectional morphology that interfaces with sign based categorial grammars, such as Linear Categorial Grammar. An overview and motivation of the approach will be provided with special attention given to how the system handles morphotactics using a system of hierarchical states.Ariana Steele'Sociophonetic construction of gender among nonbinary speakers' There will be a reception following the talks.  103 Oxley Department of Linguistics linguistics@osu.edu America/New_York public
