The Annual Linguistics Pedagogy Lecture will be given by Richard K. Larson, Professor in the Department of Linguistics at Stony Brook University.

AP Linguistics

In May 2016, the Executive Committee of the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) approved formation of an ad hoc AP Linguistics Committee (APLC). The charge of APLC is to investigate drafting of a proposal to the College Board (CB) for the creation of an AP Linguistics course and examination for the nation’s high schools. In this talk I present the AP Linguistics Initiative.

Here I discuss the motivations and potential benefits of AP Linguistics for American high schools and high school students, its attractions for the field of Linguistics, the formidable challenges the initiative faces on its path to implementation and the steps being taken to meet those challenges.

A reception will follow the talk.

In addition to linguistics research on a wide range of topics in syntax and semantics, Richard Larson has worked in undergraduate science education in connection with the NSF-sponsored Grammar as Science Project. His contributions to developing the Syntactica and Semantica software under GAS were recognized by a 1998 EduCom medal, awarded in partnership between EDUCAUSE and the Linguistic Society of America. He has also received the MIT Graduate Council Teaching Award, the Stony Brook President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Stony Brook Dean's Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching. https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/linguistics/people/_bios/_linguistics-faculty/richard-larson
