Robin Dautricourt (PhD ’10) accepted a position at Amazon, working with the Alexa Language Technologies team at Amazon headquarters in Seattle, Washington.
Kodi Weatherholtz (PhD ’15) accepted a position with Pearson Education as a full-time senior research analyst / data scientist. He has returned with his family to Columbus (from an NIH postdoc in the Jaeger lab in Brain & Cognitive Sciences at U Rochester) and will be working remotely for Pearson.
Kodi (kweatherholtz@gmail.com) has generously offered to serve as a resource for Ohio State linguists who are considering the transition to a non-academic career path. He has considered the benefits of academic vs. non-academic employment for several years, and is happy to share what he’s learned.
Bridget Smith (PhD ’13), emeritus faculty Mary Beckman and Anouschka Foltz (’10) announce the publication of their new book, Analyzing the sounds of languages. The text has been used as the basis for the Ohio State course of the same name for the past several years.

Bridget Smith (PhD ’13) accepted a postdoctoral appointment in the Phonology Laboratory of the Department of English at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Bridget will be part of laboratory director Jeff Mielke’s (Ph.D. 2004, advisor Beth Hume) NSF funded project, "Phonological implications of covert articulatory variation.”
Salena Anderson (PhD ‘10) has been awarded tenure at Valparaiso University in Indiana. Salena is associate professor of English and director of the University Writing Center.
Additional congratulations are in order for Salena and family, who welcomed baby Isaac Emmanuel on Christmas Eve 2015.
Fangfang Li (PhD ’08) has been granted tenure in her position in the Psychology Department at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.
Pat Reidy (PhD ’15) was awarded a Callier Postdoctoral Fellowship and will be at the Callier Center at the University of Texas, Dallas (http://www.utdallas.edu/calliercenter/) for the next two years.
Deborah Morton (PhD ’14) accepted a three-year appointment as a visiting assistant professor of linguistics at the Penn State Center for Language Science.
Nicole Holliday (BA ’09), who is currently completing the PhD program in Linguistics at NYU, accepted a 2-year position as a Chau Mellon Postdoctoral Scholar at Pomona College, in Claremont, CA.
At the LSA's 2016 Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., Erhard Hinrichs (PhD ‘85) and two others were unanimously elected as honorary members. There can only be a total of 60 honorary members at any given time, and only three can be elected each year.
Abbey Walker (PhD ’14) and Katie Carmichael (PhD ’14) organized Sociolinguistic Variation and Language Processing (SVALP) at Virginia Tech in March.
The program included talks and posters by many Ohio State faculty and students, including graduate students Ellen Dossey, Mike Phelan, Zack De and Zack Jones; alumna Bridget Smith (PhD ’13), and faculty Cynthia Clopper and Lauren Squires (who was an invited speaker).
Rory Turnbull (PhD ’15) just welcomed his first child—his daughter Maëlys!
Andrea Sims (PhD ’06) and Adam Ussishkin have been awarded a National Science Foundation grant to organize a two-day workshop entitled "Morphological Typology and Linguistic Cognition" at the LSA's 2017 Linguistic Summer Institute at the University of Kentucky. The workshop, which will take place July 22–23, 2017, will feature oral presentations and a poster session. The call for papers is forthcoming soon. The organizing committee also includes Jeff Parker (MA ‘13) and Samantha Wray.
Andrea also gave an invited plenary address, entitled "Inflectional systems and the dynamical organization of the lexicon", at the 11th Annual Meeting of the Slavic Linguistic Society, in Toronto (Sept. 23–25, 2016).
Her co-authored book, Understanding Morphology (Haspelmath and Sims 2010), has recently appeared in Czech and Korean translations.
Jeff Parker (MA ’13, PhD in Slavic ’16) accepted a tenure-track assistant professor position in the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Brigham Young University.
Greg Stump (PhD ’81) has been named a member of the 2017 class of LSA Fellows. Greg joins seven other Ohio State alumni and faculty who have been named LSA fellows over the last 11 years: Sandra Thompson, Ilse Lehiste and Arnold Zwicky (2006), Peter Culicover and Brian Joseph (2010), Mary Beckman (2011) and Don Winford (2014). LSA Fellows are recognized for their “distinguished contributions to the discipline.”
